November 2024

Daylight saving ended, meaning that the afternoons are shorter and you may find yourself riding more in the dark.  With the wet weather, there will be more potholes and debris in the roadway.  Make sure you have working lights and clean reflectors on your bike so that you can see and be seen.

In this month’s Newsletter:

  • Fresno World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2024 will take place on Sunday, November 17 with events at Fresno City Hall starting at 1:00 pm.

  • Plans are being made for a Vision Zero Action Plan event, which will include Bike Station, at Woodward Park on December 8 at 1:00 pm.

  • GivingTuesday is on December 3.  Please consider a donation to FCBC for furthering the mission to build healthy, equitable, and safe communities through advocacy, education, and collaboration that promotes bicycling for everyday transportation and recreation.

  • Bike Prom, one of the FCBC showcase events, was held on November 2.

  • Nominations to the FCBC Board are open until November 21, with voting beginning soon thereafter.

  • The next FCBC general membership meeting is scheduled for December 6 at 6:00 pm, at a location to be announced.

World Day of Remembrance

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Trafic Victims is on Sunday, November 17.  FCBC has collaborated with the City of Fresno Active Transportation Advisory Committee to have a memorial bike ride at 1:00 pm beginning at City Hall and then a ceremony at City Hall with speakers.

The World Day of Remembrance brings attention to the millions of people who have been killed or seriously injured on roads throughout the world and the impact to the affected victims, families, and communities.  It is also a call to action to prevent more crashes.

Fresno Vision Zero Action Plan Event and The Bike Station

The City of Fresno received a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to develop a Vision Zero Action Plan.  The goal is to have zero fatalities and serious injuries on Fresno roadways.  Several outreach events are being planned, and the final plan is expected to be released at the end of 2025.  FCBC is helping to support the outreach efforts, including by organizing bike rides and setting up Bike Station free bike repair clinics.  The first outreach event is expected to occur at Woodward Park on Sunday, December 8, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

Bike Station has been busy refurbishing kids bikes to donate to the community.  With the holidays soon approaching, plans are being made to repair several donated bikes to be given to needy individuals in the community.

GivingTuesday is December 3

FCBC is a 501(c)(3) organization with no paid staff.  The Board and other members volunteer their time and effort to put on great activities to encourage, educate, and advocate for safe bicycling for everyday transportation and recreation.  FCBC depends on membership and donations to pay for expenses, such as the cost of maintaining the website, putting on events, and supporting The Bike Station.  Additional income is occasionally generated when other organizations pay FCBC to put on an event, and all proceeds go to the FCBC coffers to support future events and endeavors.  The FCBC Board takes its fiduciary duty seriously and has full transparency.  Please consider a one-time or regular tax-deductible donation to FCBC to allow these efforts to continue.

Bike Prom 2024

Bike Prom 2024 was a huge success!  Thanks to everyone who attended and took part in making cycling visible and important in our community.  Our jaunty 2-mile bicycle ride from Fresno High School to South of Shaw Beer Companywent without a hitch.  At South of Shaw, we held our Prom King and Queen Coronation for the Martindales and had a raffle, which included a bike won by Alonso Gonzalez.  Everyone shimmied to music and had a ball at our selfie station.  If you didn't make it this year, there's always next November!  Thank you to Rubber Soul BicyclesTrek, and South of Shaw for your continued support!

Coffee Outside

A Coffee Outside Day gathering was held at Trolley Park on October 12.  This is always a fun early morning event to gather and talk about bikes or anything else.  More Coffee Outside events will be planned in the future.

Bike the Vote!

The first Bike the Vote Ride was held on October 27, with a ride from Trolley Park to the Fresno Art Museum, where ballots were cast.  There was a great response, and this may be repeated for future elections.

Ride to the River Infrastructure Ride

On October 29, about two dozen people rode to the San Joaquin River with FCBC.  On infrastructure rides, bicycle facilities are discussed, including what is done well or needs improvement, and where future improvements are needed.  There were two starting points, at Fresno High School and Oso de Oro Park.  Afterwards, lunch was at Mad Duck.

Upcoming FCBC Board Election

Nominations for the FCBC Board will be open until November 21.  New this year are nominations taken electronically on the ElectronRunner platform.  If you are a FCBC member and did not receive an email soliciting nominations, you can send an email to info@fresnobike.org.

There are nine positions on the Board, consisting of Chair, Vice Chair, Past Chair, Secretary, Membership Coordinator, Treasurer, and three Members at Large.  There are open seats on the Board, as several Board members are stepping down from their current positions.  FCBC members may nominate other FCBC members or themselves for any of the Board positions except Past Chair, which is not an elected position.  There are no specific requirements to be a Board member other than being a FCBC member and resident within Fresno County.  More information regarding the duties and election process can be found in the FCBC bylaws, and any questions can be directed to info@fresnobike.org.

Next General Membership Meeting

The December general membership meeting will be on Friday, December 6.  An in-person meeting is being planned, and the results of the 2025 Board officer elections will be announced at the meeting.  Stay tuned for more information.  The next FCBC Board meeting will be in January.
