The evenings are getting shorter — don't forget to check your lights — and we have a lot to share this month, including a new meeting day, a major endorsement for the November ballot, and two guest articles from FCBC Vice Chair John Liu, who previously served as FCBC's newsletter editor. FCBC MEETINGS MOVE TO MONDAYSStarting this month, FCBC's General Membership and Board meetings are moving from the third Tuesday to the second Monday of each month. The change takes effect with our September meeting on Monday, September 14 — General Membership at 6:30 PM, followed by the Board meeting at 7:00 PM, both via Zoom. The shift to Mondays was discussed at the July board meeting and confirmed by the board in August. Future meetings are scheduled for Monday, October 12 and Monday, November 9. We hope the new day works better for members who've had scheduling conflicts on Tuesdays — and if you've been waiting for the right time to get involved, now's a good moment. FCBC ENDORSES MEASURE SFCBC's board voted 5–0 on August 18 to endorse Measure S, the countywide transportation sales tax on this November's ballot. The measure directs the majority of funding to repairing existing neighborhood streets and includes at least 120 miles of new bike paths and protected lanes, plus over 150 Safe Routes to School projects — a scale of investment in biking and walking infrastructure we haven't seen before. Measure S, if passed, would succeed Measure C, which is the existing half-cent transportation sales tax that expires in 2027. CITY OF FRESNO ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION ADVISORY COMMITTEEBy John Liu, Guest Writer The City of Fresno has a forum for the public to be involved with pedestrian and bicycling issues within the City. Originally known as BPAC, the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, it was renamed to ATAC, the Active Transportation Advisory Committee, to encompass all modes of active transportation, including riding scooters. The committee meets ten times a year, typically on the 4th Wednesday at 5:30 pm at City Hall or via Zoom. ATAC consists of nine members. One is appointed by each of the seven councilmembers, and two are appointed by the Mayor. The Chair is Nick Yovino, Jr. The other members are Jacob Bailey, Aric Mine, Diana Durham, Laura Gromis, Paul Marquez, Mohammad Shaikh, and April D. Henry, with one vacancy for District 7, represented by Councilmember Nelson Esparza. If you are interested in applying for the District 7 vacancy or a mayoral vacancy opening up in November, you may apply here. ATAC meetings typically have a public comment period, Board member reports, task force reports, presentations on various active transportation topics, a traffic safety report, and updates on grants and public works projects. UPCOMING FCBC BOARD ELECTIONSBy John Liu, Guest Writer FCBC is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a volunteer Board that sets the direction, plans the activities, and manages the resources of the organization. The Board is very much a working Board, and one that takes great satisfaction in spreading the joy of bicycling as transportation and recreation, as well as promoting bicycle safety and improved bicycle infrastructure. FCBC Board elections are held in December, with nominations taken at the November Board meeting. There are nine positions on the Board, consisting of Chair, Vice Chair, Past Chair, Secretary, Membership Coordinator, Treasurer, and three Members at Large. With Edna Pedroza moving out of state a few months ago, the Chair position is currently vacant and is needing to be filled. There may be additional vacancies on the Board. Regardless if there are any open seats, FCBC members are encouraged to run for any position other than Past Chair, which is not an elected position and is instead filled by the previous Chair to maintain continuity and knowledge transfer. New Board members help bring new energy and ideas to the Board, and a strategic planning meeting is held in January to set the priorities and plan the events for the year. Nominations to the Board may be made by any FCBC member, and self-nominations are allowed. There are no specific requirements to be a Board member other than being a FCBC member and resident within Fresno County.
