Spring has sprung, and one of the traditional markers of the beginning of spring is the Blossom Bike Ride that starts in Reedley. This year it occurred on March 1, and FCBC, including The Bike Station, was there to support the event and cheer on the more than 400 participants. Springtime bicycle events are just starting up, with many more bicycle education, encouragement, and advocacy events planned in the coming months.

FCBC will be hosting a Vision Zero Action Plan outreach event at Wesley United Methodist Church at 1343 E. Barstow Avenue in Fresno, just west of Fresno State, on Sunday, March 30 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Attendees will learn about the City’s plan to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries for all road users. There will be a neighborhood bike ride on the Class IV cycle tracks on Barstow Avenue. A bike rodeo and safety course will be set up for kids and adults. You can use your own bike or a bike belonging to FCBC on the course. While The Bike Station will not be doing bicycle repair at this event, they will be raffling off refurbished bikes for both kids and adults. Register here.
At the last Vision Zero Action Plan outreach event on February 22 at Holmes Community Center, about 50 attendees showed up to learn more about the Action Plan or participate in the neighborhood bike ride, which included the new Class II bike lanes on Tulare Avenue. The Bike Station was on hand for bicycle repair and a refurbished bike giveaway.
On March 21 to 23, FCBC will be facilitating the first League Cycling Instructor (LCI) Seminar in Fresno in over five years. FCBC has been working with the Fresno County Department of Public Health, CalFresh Healthy Living Program, to bring the seminar to Fresno, with some financial support from the Fresno Council of Governments and the use of Fresno State facilities courtesy of the US Green Building Council Central California. The LCI Seminar teaches participants to become teachers of Smart Cycling classes with about 24 hours of instruction. Upon completion, the new LCIs will be able to confidently teach and demonstrate bicycle safety and skills for bike riders of all ages.
The LCI Seminar will certify 16 new LCI candidates, with the majority being in the Fresno area. Significantly, several of the candidates are in Fresno County outside the core Fresno-Clovis urban area, which would extend the reach of bicycle education in Fresno County beyond the focus area of FCBC. The candidates also include three of the existing FCBC Board Members. The LCI Seminar will be taught by LCI Coach Jim Baross, President of the California Association of Bicycle Organizations (CABO) and Board Member of the League of American Bicyclists (LAB). Jim will be assisted by LCIs from FCBC and the Southern Sierra Cyclists of Tulare County.
Over the past month, LCIs with FCBC taught the prerequisite Smart Cycling class, consisting of a virtual classroom session, on-bike session that includes parking lot drills and an on-bike road ride, and passing a written test. Four on-bike sessions were conducted, and the weather was largely cooperative during a stormy month other than a downpour with hail that occurred at the end of one of the sessions.
FCBC will be at the Earth Day Fresno event at Fresno City College on Saturday, April 12 between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, with The Bike Station demonstrating how to change a flat and do the "ABC Quick Check," as well as providing bike valet to allow you to park your bike while you enjoy the activities at the event. FCBC is also hosting a bike ride from Downtown Fresno to Fresno City College. Meet in front of City Hall at 10:00 am and ride to City College on the newer Class IV cycle tracks along Van Ness Avenue. Register here for the bike ride.
The first Coffee Outside event will be held on April 14, the day before Tax Day, from 7:00 am to 8:30 am at the Cultural Arts District Park located at Fulton and Calaveras Streets in Downtown Fresno. Bring your own beverage of choice, and you can also support one of the nearby coffee shops or brew your own coffee with a backpacking stove. Enjoy the camaraderie of other bicycle enthusiasts as you begin the day. Register here.
The first annual Dapper Spring Ride and Picnic is just weeks away on Easter Sunday, April 20. The meeting location will be the Tower Theatre at 11:00 am. From there will be a ride to the picnic location, and more details will be announced as the date gets closer. Start to get your vintage bike ready if you have one (and if you don’t, any bike will do), and be prepared to wear your stylish spring pastels. Bring your own food and beverages, and wicker baskets, fine linens, and silverware will be strictly optional. Register here.
The next general membership and Board meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, March 18 at 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm, respectively, via Zoom. The general membership meeting is for members and nonmembers to meet with the Board prior to the official Board meeting to ask questions or raise issues for the Board to consider. Board meetings are restricted to members only.
If you would like to participate in either or both meetings, register here, and you will immediately get the Zoom link.
