Get Ready to Ride

Spring is just around the corner, but the warm, dry weather and longer days have been close to ideal for bike-riding.  If you haven’t already done so, get your bike ready to ride, and always remember to do the ABC Quick Check every time you ride by checking the air in your tires, making sure the brakes are in good working order, and then checking that the chain, crank, and cassette work smoothly.  Also check that all quick releases are tight, and then do a final check all over before riding off.  It is a good idea to periodically wipe and lubricate the chain and change it around every 2,000 miles to prevent premature wear to the drivetrain.   As a chain becomes worn, it gets stretched, which accelerates wear to the cassette and chainring.  Replacing a chain can be much cheaper than other components of the drivetrain.

The City of Fresno is Still Bronze

The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) once again awarded the City of Fresno a bronze designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community, the same level as awarded in 2016.  Bronze is the lowest level, with the other levels in ascending order being silver, gold, and platinum. Efforts that can improve Fresno’s standing to become a silver community in the future include increasing the bike network and connectivity, adding a full-time bicycle and pedestrian coordinator to staff, and having a bike-share system that is open to the public.  A high priority for the Fresno Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) is for the City of Fresno to hire a full-time Active Transportation Program Coordinator on Public Works staff.

Fresno Chinese New Year Parade on March 7

Chinese New Year was on January 25, but the annual Fresno Chinese New Year Parade will be on Saturday, March 7.  Come celebrate the Year of the Rat and visit or help out at the FCBC booth or be a part of the parade on your bike.  FCBC will be providing bike valet.  The color red represents luck, joy, and happiness.  The event begins at 10 am, with the parade starting at noon.

Bike Safe Fresno Event at Edison High School on March 14

FCBC will participate in the first of three Bike Safe Fresno educational events in 2020 on March 14 between 9:00 am and noon at Edison High School in southwest Fresno.  These events are led by the US Green Building Council Central California as part of the Transformative Climate Communities Initiative.  FCBC will be providing Smart Cycling instruction and on-bike parking lot drills for both adults and children.

Next Board Meeting

The next FCBC Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 27, at the Betty Rodriguez Regional Library on Cedar Avenue south of Shields Avenue.  The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m.  Everyone is welcome to attend.
