Summer Riding

The hottest time of the year is upon us, but it’s still a great time to get on your bike and ride.  Here are a few safety tips:

  • Hydrate and carry plenty of water.  Drink extra water an hour or two before riding your bike.  You may want to add ice to your water bottle or to partially fill it and then freeze it so that as you’re riding you’re not quenching your thirst with warm water.
  • Cover up.  Use sunscreen or wear apparel with built-in sun protection.  Cotton clothing will soak up your sweat. Wear synthetic sweat-wicking fabrics instead.  Consider riding along tree-lined streets and riding earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon or evening.
  • Get acclimated to the heat.  Do not overexert yourself as the temperatures rise, especially on days over 100 degrees.  On humid days, your sweat will not be as effective cooling down, so take it easy.
  • Always wear a bike helmet, and use one that has good ventilation.

4th of July Ride

Tea Gonzalez and Sara Topete led the popular 4th of July Ride, which started with a BBQ at Tower Velo Bicycle Shop in the Tower District and ended at Chukchansi Park.  There were 20 participants, with good fun and great prizes.

Helmet Giveaways

FCBC has partnered with the Fresno Cycling Club and the City of Fresno Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee to distribute bicycle helmets.  At the invitation of Fresno Councilmember Nelson Esparza, FCBC distributed 40 helmets at Romain Park, where family activities were taking place, on July 11.  Additional helmet giveaways are planned at Romain Park on July 18 and 25 between 5:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

New Location for Board Meeting

The FCBC Board will be meeting on Thursday, July 18 at the Me-N-Ed's Victory Grill at Granite Park, located on Cedar Avenue south of Ashlan Avenue.  For those who will be ordering food, plan to arrive at 5:30 p.m. The Board meeting will start promptly at 6:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
